Learn how to keep your memory foam dog bed supportive and clean for years. Simple care steps, common mistakes, and when to replace the foam.
Quick answer
To extend your memory foam dog bed's life, rotate the foam monthly, use a washable cover, spot clean spills immediately, and keep the bed out of direct sunlight. Replace the foam every 2-3 years or when it no longer springs back.
Why memory foam needs different care than standard padding
Memory foam is temperature-sensitive and responds to weight by contouring. Unlike polyester fill, it can hold heat and moisture, which accelerates breakdown if not aired out. The foam itself should never go in a washing machine or dryer — that destroys its cell structure. Instead, focus on protecting the foam core with a waterproof liner and a removable cover.
5-step memory foam bed care routine
- Rotate the foam every month: Flip the memory foam layer over and also rotate it 180 degrees so wear is even. This prevents a permanent body-shaped depression from forming in one spot. If the foam does not return to its original shape within a few hours of rotating, it may be time to replace it.
- Air the bed weekly: Remove the cover and let the foam sit in a well-ventilated room for a few hours. This releases trapped moisture and odour. Avoid direct sunlight — UV rays break down memory foam. A common mistake is leaving the bed in a damp garage or laundry room where moisture gets trapped.
- Spot clean spills immediately: Blot (don't rub) the spill with a dry cloth, then dab with a mild soap solution and blot again. Never soak the foam. For urine, use an enzymatic cleaner made for pet messes. Rubbing pushes liquid deeper into the foam, making odour nearly impossible to remove.
- Wash the cover on a gentle cycle: Remove the cover and wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry low or air dry. Do not use fabric softener — it clogs the fabric pores and reduces breathability. Skipping cover washes lets dirt and oil reach the foam, shortening its life by months.
- Check foam resilience every 6 months: Press your hand into the centre of the foam. If the indentation stays for more than 10 seconds after you lift your hand, the foam has lost its support. Replace the bed or foam insert at that point. A sagging bed can cause joint pain; replacing on time is cheaper than a vet visit.
Products that make care easier
- Memory Foam Dog Bed - Canvas Seafoam: Our heavy-duty canvas bed is perfect for active dogs. Ideal for shedding, it keeps hair on the surface for easy cleaning and holds up to light scratching and daily wear with its durable design. A canvas cover with a waterproof liner underneath protects memory foam from moisture and makes hair removal quick — both reduce how often you need to deep-clean the foam itself.
- Corner Bed - Puffer Fern: The same signature orthopaedic support, with easier access. An open-front design makes it easier for older dogs and sore joints to get on and off, while the raised back and side still provide a comfortable place to rest. Featuring dual-layer CertiPUR-US® memory foam, a waterproof liner and a washable cover. The dual-layer foam and built-in waterproof liner reduce the need for separate protective layers, and the washable cover simplifies routine cleaning without disturbing the foam core.
